Kakinada is one of the cities which is listed to become a smart city by government of India.
So what is the story of this city?
The story starts with the name of the city. The name itself is surrounded by many stories. One says its name before independence was Cocanada, because Dutch use to export Koka sarees from here. Some says it was named after Kakasura losing his eye by Lord Rama.
Kakinada, which is the Headquarters of The East Godavari District, is known as rice bowl of Andhra Pradesh and attracts tourists with its lush paddy fields and coconut groves swaying in the breeze which appear to dance in the celebration to life. It is where soulful bhajans and holy shlokas herald the dawn, the chirping birds and gurgling streams invite you to its beautiful lakes and rivers and wildlife sanctuaries and the waves sounds like carnatic music.
Wow! So what is there in the sack of Kakinada which attracts tourists?
There is great history defining Kakinada. It had a huge role during Chalukyan and Mauryan Kingdoms.
There are many places which showcases the heritage and culture of past time in and around Kakinada. A 500 year old Sri Bhavanarayana Temple which is 5 kms away from Kakinada that showcases the architecture blend of Chalukya and Chola Kingdoms. It is located at Sarpavaram. Sarpa means Snack and Varam means Boon. Well the story is that a Snack was given a Boon here by Lord Vishnu, so the place is named as Sarpavaram and Lord Vishnu along with his wife were situated there.
And also around Kakinada there are two Pancharamas located, known as Samalkot and Draksharamam along with one of the Shakthipetas Pithapuram. These temples define the great heritage of Andhra Pradesh.

Kakinada is the coastal pilgrimage of Andhra Pradesh. Due to its coastal border, it served as key town for Dutch and French before independence. The beach, known as Uppada Beach attracts many tourists at the time of Beach festivals and more attractions including water games. And Jagannaickpur Bridge which connects two regions of the city.
When talking about coastal borders, needs to address its Port. Kakinada has two ports Anchorage port and Deep water port. Deep water port is the second largest port in Andhra Pradesh. And the first to be built in public-private partnership in India.
Within the range of 5 kms from Kakinada there is a Youngest Island located in Bay of Bengal known as Hope Island. It protects the city from strong storms and Tsunami. It is the nesting ground for Vulnerable Olive Ridley Turtles.

If we are talking about Turtles we need to address the Wildlife Sanctuary in Kakinada which is Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary. It is the second largest stretch of mangrove forests in India, with 24 different tree species and 120 bird species. It is home to the endangered white-backed vulture and long billed vulture. The beauty of the nature must be seen through eyes and the tweets of birds must be heard through ears.
The heritage of this city also include its food. Kakinada is widely known for its special sweet dish called Kakinada Kaja, which is a world famous dish. Being a port city it is also famous for its Seafood. The seafood is also exported to many places from here. And there is great vegetarian restaurant in Kakinada which is world famous know as Subbaya Hotel. Well Kakinada has many world famous things in it.
